2013-2014 Schedule Promises Diversity of Material Culture Opportunities

B. Stephen Carpenter, Professor and Chair of Art Education, Pennsylvania State University, will speak on the ceramic water filter project on September 26 at the Wexner Center for the Arts. His research bridges many disciplines ranging from eco-responsibility, social issues, visual arts and visual culture. The presentation is co-sponsored by the Working Group for the Center for Material Culture Studies, and the Wexner Center for the Arts. A reception will follow the presentation.

Joy McCorriston, Professor, Department of Anthropology, Monuments as Material Culture among Mobile Pastoralists in Arabia. The talk will focus on the problem of preservation of material culture of mobile groups and will contrast the permanence of monuments with the impermanence of perishable fibers

Jenny Robb, Curator and Associate Professor, Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, tour of the new facilities of the renovated Sullivant Hall.

John Block Friedman, Emeritus Professor of English and Medieval Studies, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will speak on “Carnations and Material Culture in Late Medieval Netherlandish Manuscript Painting”

Gayle Strege, Kathryn Jakes, Marlise Schoeny

Gayle Strege (Curator of the Historic Costume & Textiles Collection), Kathryn Jakes (professor) and Marlise Schoeny (assistant curator) are working on digital image databases of historic costume from full garments through close ups to fiber components.  Supported by an IMLS grant, Fashion2Fiber will be enhanced to include images and text useful for middle and high school history teachers as they develop curricula. Two Institutes will be held for the teachers in June 2013 and June 2014. The Fiber Reference Image Library forms a companion site which is focused on fibers, their identification and characterization. The mission of the Center for Material Culture Studiesat the Ohio State University is to provide a forum for interdisciplinary inquiry and  research focusing on material culture.  The center will also serve as an umbrella organization under which the diverse and disparate collections held across the university will be made more accessible to the faculty, undergraduate and graduate students and the community.
