Are Jews a Nation? Identity, Citizenship and Nationalism
In the nineteenth century, nationalists argued that states should match nations — that all members of a nation-state should share an ethnicity, a language, and a culture. Drawing on the story of Nissim Shamama, a wealthy Tunisian Jew who died in Italy in 1873, Jessica Marglin, Associate Director of Religion at University of Southern California, will discuss how Jews were imagined as a nation before Zionism and other forms of Jewish nationalism.
Jessica Marglin, Associate Director of Religion at University of Southern California will be this year's speaker. Professor Marglin works on the history of Jews and Jewish-Muslim relations in modern North Africa and the Mediterranean. More broadly, she has interests in the history of Jews in the Islamic world, in Sephardic history, and in Mediterranean Studies.
